WESTPORT AC SUCCESS AT CONNAUGHT INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Sunday March 3rd, 36 juvenile athletes from Westport AC travelled to the brand new international-class sports arena in Athlone, where they competed in the Connaught Indoor Championships.
The first event of the day was the U12 4x100m Girls Relay, where our team of Saoirse O'Brien, Tara Needham, Brianna Bruton, Annie noonan and Ella Staunton ran a fantastic race storming home in second place in a time of 1:02.2. The next Westport medal win was in the U14 4x200m Boys Relay where our fine team of Patrick Chambers, Cian McAllister, Marley Hoban and Fiachra Byrne came home in a time of 2:00.02,
resulting in a team bronze.
On the track Saoirse O'Brien ran a brilliant U12 girls 600m storming home in 1st place in a marvellous time of 1:53.6. Ava-Lynne Kane also ran her heart out to take a bronze in the U13 girls 600m. Ellen Noonan had a great day winning silver in the U14 girls hurdles. Cian McAllister came home third in the U14 boys 800m. Aoife O'Brien came third in the U15 girls 1K walk, while Sorcha McAllister took the silver in the U16 girls 1500m. Diarmuid McGreal took the bronze in the U18 boys 60m, while Jason Gavin took a silver in the u19 boys 400m together with a bronze in the 800m. Ellen Moran ran a spectacular race to take the gold in the U19 girls 1500m. One of the performances of the day was that of Cain Moore, who won the bronze in the Senior Mens 200m and provided great excitement for everyone.
There was also great success at the field events. In the U12 boys 2kg shot putt Adam Sheridan threw 8.27m, earning the gold medal, a full 1.54m ahead of his nearest competitor. In the U12 girls high jump Saoirse O'Brien won her third medal of the day, coming in third place with a jump of 1.15m. In the U12 boys Oisin Ryall also jumped 1.15m earning himself the silver medal. Ellen Noonan won her second silver for the day in the U14 girls high jump. In the U14 girls 2kg shot putt Kate O'Malley threw 9.69m, easily taking the gold, as did Jennifer Chambers who threw 9.08m in the U15 girls 2.72kg shot. Saoirse Ludden took the gold in the U16 girls high jump, where Sorcha McAllister earned her second medal of the day taking the silver. Saoirse went on to win her second gold by also winning the U16 girls long jump.
