The Connaught Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were held last Saturday in Calry in Sligo and Westport AC athletes brought home an impressive 11 medals for their schools. Due to the recent wet weather, conditions were really tough for all athletes.
First up was the 3rd/4th class boys 800m where Rossa McAllister from Gaelscoil na Cruaithe, Westport had a fantastic race coming home in nineth place. His teammates Eanna Geraghty, Rossa Horgan, Sean Heaney, Shane O'Malley and Malcolm McEvilly all put in some fine performances just falling short of a team medal. St Patricks NS, Westport was also well represented in the race by Oisin Ryall.
The next race was the 5th/6th class girls 1000m where Ellen Noonan from Gaelscoil na Cruaithe, Westport flew home in fourth position followed closely by her teammate Saoirse O'Brien(who is only in 5th class) in sixth place. Kerri McHale, Brianna Bruton, Anna O'Riain and Fiona Bree were all close behind resulting in this wonderful Gaelscoil team taking home the team silver.
The last juvenile race of the day was the 5th/6th class boys 1000m where Patrick Chambers, representing Holy Family NS, Newport ran a brilliant race, storming home in first place. Luke Dawson(also only in 5th class), representing Quay NS, Westport came home in tenth position. Gaelscoil na Cruaithe were also well represented by the team of Ethan McEvilly, Cillian Heaney, Hugh McEvilly and Donall O'Buachalla.
The senior novice and masters mens and womens races followed and once again Westport AC had tremendous success with Tony Heraty winning individual bronze leading to the mens novice team of Richard Johnson, Andrew Beatty, Tony Heraty, Ivan Dixon and Criostoir O'Haolain bringing home team gold.
