Westport AC had a host of impressive displays at the Connaught Even Age Cross Country Championships last weekend.  The venue, Sligo Racecourse, proved to be extremely challenging.

The U12 girls 2km race was first, with Westport well represented by Ellen Noonan coming in 5th place, contributing to the county team taking home the gold medal.  Next in was Leah Moran in 24th place, followed by Kate Chambers 35th, Michaela O’Malley 37th and Ellen Power (running out of age) in 44th position.

In the U12 boys 2km race, the Westport team put in a really impressive performance, totally dominating their age group, winning the club team gold together with county gold.  Patrick Chambers led home in 1st place, followed closely by Cian McAllister 3rd, Aaron Doherty 4th, Oisin Moran 9th, Mark Moran 14th, Marley Hoban 16th and Daniel Corcoran in 39th position, a great race for his first time running cross country.  The result was a team win with 17 points, 31 points ahead of their nearest rivals and a county win with 46 points, 20 points ahead of Galway with 66.

Next up for Westport was Sorcha McAllister who came home in 9th place in the U14 girls 3km race, contributing to the Mayo team coming second on the day.

Last, but my no means least, was Con Doherty, who also brought home gold, in the U18 boys 5km race, putting in an incredible performance while running out of age.

Well done to all. The next competition for the qualifying athletes will be the All-Ireland Even Cross Country Championships, which will also be held at Sligo Racecourse on Sunday 27th November.

The Connaught Uneven Cross Country Championships takes place next Sunday, 13th November in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim at 1pm and once again some of Westport Athletics Club’s finest athletes will be taking part.  Best of luck to them all!
