Westport Athletics Club U9-U12 athletes travelled to Dangan in Galway last Saturday to compete in the Connaught Outdoor championships.  Westport AC had a very successful day with a large medal haul for the club.  The day started with the U9 boys team of Harry Sheridan and Niall McGreal throwing a combined 37.77m in the ball throw and winning gold.  In the U9 girls the long jump team of Emily Chambers and Maggie Chambers jumped their way to the silver medal with a combined jump of 5.46m.  Also in the U9 girls the 300m team of Laura Moran and Roisin O’Brien came home in third position in a combined time of 1:57.5.

Annie Noonan and Ruth Moran joined forces and sprinted home in an excellent 18.8s in the U11 girls 60m taking second place.  Ciara and Tara Needham were very close behind winning bronze in 19.0s.  In the U11 girls long jump Caoimhe Gannon and Sarah Harper had a combined jump of 6.56m bringing home the bronze.  Next Caoimhe Gannon and Saoirse O’Brien joined up to take the gold medal in the U11 girls 600m in a fantastic combined time of 3:58.6.  The girls were followed by Annie Noonan and Briana Bruton taking second position in a combined time of 4:10.3.  The U11 girls relay team consisting of Ruth Moran, Saoirse O’Brien, Sarah Harper, Annie Noonan and Caoimhe Gannon ran their hearts out to win bronze medals in a time of 63.6s.

In the U12 boys 600m Luke Dawson ran a fine race winning a silver medal in a time of 1:50.5 and in the U12 girls 600m Ava-Lynne Kane ran another great race in what was a tight battle bringing home the bronze in a time of 1:57.2.

All of these athletes now progress to the All Ireland finals, which take place in Cork Institute of Technology on June 23rd.
The Connaught Championships for the U13-U19 will take place on Sunday 17th June in Dangan, Galway.
