Athletes from Connaught, together with Longford, travelled to Sligo last Saturday, 7th June to compete in the Connaught juvenile U9-U11 team and U12 individual outdoor championships.  Westport AC had a very successful day with six teams qualifying for the All-Irelands. The first medal of the day was in the u10 long jump with Leila O’Malley and Olivia Costello  jumping a combined total of 6.19m taking home the bronze.  Leila was also partnered with Sarah Mulroy, who both ran their hearts out, to win gold in the u10 girls 60m sprint in a total time of 20.50s.  The next medal was won in the u11 girls turbo javelin by cousins Maggie and Emily Chambers who came away with the gold with a combined total of 37.90m, a full 8m ahead of their nearest rivals.  The next medal was in the same event when Harry Sheridan and Niall McGreal threw superbly to win the U11 boys turbo javelin with a total of 48.04m, 8.5m ahead of the silver medal winners. Later, in the afternoon Laura Moran and Sophie Scahill flew home to secure the bronze medal in the u11 girls 600m with a total of 4:10.65.  The final medal of the day was by Tim Carty and Ciarán Murphy in the u10 Boys turbo javelin winning silver with a total of 27.66m.  

There were many other fine performances of the day by our other competitors Eva Ryall, Freya Shackleton, Anna O’Donnell, Aoife Conway, Declan Moore, Padraig Corduff, Orlaith McGeogh, Adam Nugent, Fionn O’Ruain, Aine Fallon, Abbey McGreal, Katie O'Grady, Colin Hastings, Conal Dawson, Joe Sweet, Ciaran Kilcoyne,  Alyssa Shackleton, Shane O’Malley, Ted Horan, Richard O’Donnell and Harrison Quinn, many just shy of a medal.  The six medal winning teams now qualify for the All- Ireland Championships which will be held in Tullamore on June 21st
