Thousands to take to the streets of Castlebar for Western People West of Ireland Women’s Mini ...

The third annual Western People West of Ireland Women’s Mini Marathon will take place in Castlebar on Sunday, May 6, 2012. More than 5,000 women are expected to take part in this year’s event.

The event was officially launched in Áras an Chontae, Castlebar on Thursday evening, January 26, by Minister for Sport and Tourism, Michael Ring. The Minister congratulated the organisers and participants who have made the event possible over the last two years and wished them the very best of luck on the May Bank Holiday Sunday this year,

The event was dreamt up by the Western People in 2010 and enthusiastically taken up by the Mayo Sports Partnership. The inaugural event attracted some 3,000 participants, while 4,000 took to the streets of Castlebar in 2011. It is expected that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before.

In developing Western People West of Ireland Women’s Mini Marathon, the intention was to create a fun day, encouraging people to get out, get fit and enjoy the company of other women.

The 10k race is open to serious athletes, fun runners and walkers. It also acts as a major fundraiser for charities and over the last two years, local charities have succeeded in raising €1million through the Mini Marathon. Some 60 charities were represented in the Mini Marathon in 2011.

In addition to the event itself, the benefits the Mini Marathon brings for Castlebar cannot be underestimated. “Holding the Western People Mini Marathon in the County Town is something we’re very proud of in the Western People and we are thrilled with the economic benefit it brings for Castlebar. Again this year, we are hoping that the town comes out in force to welcome the entrants,” said Cróna Esler, deputy editor of the Western People, speaking at the launch of the event in the county council chamber, Áras an Chontae.

“The mini marathon has become a major event in Mayo Sports Partnerships calendar and is a vital focus now for women who participate in our walking programmes such as our ‘FitWalk Programme and running programmes such as Fit4life ‘meet and train’ programmes throughout the year. The revenue from the mini marathon has also allowed us to develop many new programmes some targeting minority groups in disadvantaged areas as well as ‘introduction to athletics’ programmes for national school children in Mayo. The Mini Marathon has also allowed us continue our ‘Special Participation Grant Scheme’ which funds worthy sports programmes in clubs and organisations throughout the county. We are really looking forward to the 2012 mini marathon and a new impetus in Physical Activity throughout the county. ” added Anne Ronayne, Community Sports Development officer with the Mayo Sports Partnership.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE FROM ALANNAH GANNON, WESTPORT AC

Alannah Gannon, representing Westport AC, travelled to Nenagh last weekend to compete in Woodie's DIY Juvenile Indoor Combined Events Championships of Ireland. 21 of Ireland's top U14 athletes competed in this grueling 5-event competition. First up was the 60m Hurdles where Alannah excelled coming second in a PB of 10.04s. This was followed by the Long Jump and another PB for Alannah with a superb jump of 4.62m, a full 22cm further than her nearest rival. Next up was the Shot Putt, although not her strongest event, Alannah came fifth with a throw of 8.31m, another PB. The fourth event of the day, Alannah's strongest, the High Jump, and yet another superb performance jumping an exceptional 1.50m, a brilliant PB. The final event was the 800m, where Alannah came home second in another noteworthy time of 2.41.36, her fifth PB of the day. All of this resulted in a silver medal for Alannah with total points for the day of 2589, just 5 points behind the gold medalist. Alannah is a superb multi talented athlete and definitely one to watch in the future. Well done Alannah!

THREE BRONZE MEDALS FOR WESTPORT AC

The Woodie’s DIY Novice and Uneven age group championships took place last Sunday at the Curragh Camp, Co. Kildare and Westport AC had 13 juvenile athletes competing.

First up was the U11 Girls 1500m and Westport was well represented by Saoirse O'Brien, Briana Bruton, Sarah Staunton and Anna O'Riain, who all ran well in the race of over 150 competitors, with Saoirse O'Brian, running out of age, coming home in an excellent 17th position, surely a contender for next year.

Next was the U11 Boys 1500m and the Westport team consisted of Luke Dawson, Cillian Heaney, Rossa McAllister, Sean Doherty, Steven Keating and Michael Hamilton. Great performances all round with Luke Dawson, running a superb race, coming in a fantastic third position bringing home both an individual bronze and a regional bronze as part of the Connaught team.

The U13 Girls and Boys 2500m were next where both Aoife O'Brien and Joe Dawson put in fine performances for Westport.

The last, but by no means least, competitor of the day for Westport was David Harper. The rain came down just before his U17 4500m race but this did not stop David being up there with the leaders, running a brilliant race and finishing in third position, ending what has been a fantastic year for David.

This year's cross country success has to be attributed to both the athletes and coaches for all the hard work involved with the training on the beach, the track and the Greenway. A huge thanks to you all!

LOUGH FURNACE 10KM RACE SUCCESS

The inaugural Lough Furnace 10km race took place last Sunday December 4th at Derrada just outside Newport and was a tremendous success. The race was organised by Georgia MacMillan and Gerry Kilroy on behalf of Westport AC and sanctioned by AAI. This challenging road race included several short sharp hills and took the 82 competitors around one of the most picturesque courses in the west.

The race winner was Anthony Devaney, Ballyvary (Mayo AC) who crossed the line in an impressive time of 37.36. Second home was Noel Gibbons, Western Lakes Cycling Club, Ballinrobe in 38.08 followed by Brendan Conway, Westport in a time of 39.45.

First to cross the line for the women was Dalva McPhillips, Westport Triathlon Club in a time of 48.10. Pauline Moran from Newport came home second in 49.17, closely followed by Donna Gallagher, Claremorris (Mayo AC) in 49.19.

Special mention needs to go to 80 year old Sean Dooner (81 in April 'the oldest runner in Ireland'), South West Vets AC and Longford AC who finished the race in an amazing time of 81.57, a shining example to all.

Sincere thanks to Georgia MacMillan for her trojan work in the organising and coordination of the race. Also to the local resident & club volunteers who gave their time in typical race weather, to Sinead and Francis Cusack and Derrada Community Hall. ALL IRELAND SILVER MEDALS FOR WESTPORT AC U12 BOYS

Last Sunday the Woodie’s DIY Inter County and Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships of Ireland took place at the Racecourse, Sligo.

Westport Athletics Club had a very successful day with its boys U12 team taking the team silver medal in their 2km race. First in for the team was Patrick Chambers in second place followed by Cian McAllister in 22nd. Third home was Aaron Doherty in 26th position followed by Mark Moran in 54th. Marley Hoban was next followed by Oisin Moran. Overall a superb performance and great experience for the boys.

Other competitors for Westport AC include Ellen Noonan who came 59th in the U12 Girls 2km and Sorcha McAllister who also had a good performance in the U14 Girls 3km.

Congratulations to all our athletes who did us proud.
